Free software for personal trainers: 2026 comparison of what each option includes

Free options for coaches in 2026: what each includes, its limits and when it pays. Official prices with date and source.

JPJuanPaCreator of TrainingForever·October 16, 2026

Short answer: Yes, a coach can manage his first clients without paying. In 2026 there are three serious free options: Intervals.icu, free for everyone and strong in analysis; TrainingForever, with free version up to 5 athletes; and the free athlete account of TrainingPeaks or Final Surge, where the coach does pay.

  • Intervals.icu: free for everyone, very strong in endurance analysis; any user can train others if the athlete accepts it.
  • TrainingForever: Free version up to 5 athletes with all functions (planning, loading, messages, forms, strength with images and videos).
  • The free athlete account of payment tools like TrainingPeaks or Final Surge: the athlete does not pay, but the coach does.

What is rarely free: getting paid by your customers, automations and AI features. Here's what each option includes and when it pays off.

The options, one by one

We only tell what each company publishes on its website (link). Functions and prices change: check them before you decide.

Intervals.icu

Your pricing page says that the platform is free for everyone, with no tests or time limits, and that the Supporter fee ($4/month) adds extra features. It synchronizes with Garmin, Strava, Polar, Suunto, Coros, Wahoo and Zwift, among others (intervals.icu/pricing). Any user can follow (read only) or train (with writing permission) another athlete, provided he accepts the request (Intervals.icu: Athletes). Training groups, which give automatic coach access to an entire group, require supporter (official guide on your forum).

Fits if You train mostly cycling or endurance and feel comfortable with a lot of analysis. Keep in mind that it is designed as an analysis and planning tool; it is not a customer management software with collections.

TrainingPeaks

The coach edition starts at $21.99/month, with 4 Basic athlete accounts and 1 Premium included; each additional Premium athlete costs $9/month, with volume discounts. Announces a $99 high fee (free with a coupon posted on the same page) and a 7-day free trial (trainingpeaks.com/pricing/for-coaches).

Fits if your athletes already use it or you work with triathletes that ask for that ecosystem. It is not free for the coach: the free part is the Basic account of the athlete. If you plan to change, we compare it as an alternative to TrainingPeaks.

Final Surge

The athlete's personal account is free and the coach package starts at $19/month for 1–5 athletes, according to their price page (finalsurge.com/pricing). It has special prices for institutes and universities.

Nolio

The Coach Starter plan costs 19,90 €/month for a maximum of 3 athletes and 1 coach; the athlete's registration is free and his Premium account costs 6,90 €/month. Higher plans offer 1 month test without card (nolio.io/en/pricing/coach).

TrueCoach

More oriented to personal fitness coaches and strength. The Starter plan appears from $26.34/month for up to 5 active customers, with library of exercise videos, messages and automatic payments; integration with wearables such as Garmin or Apple arrives in the Standard plan ($57.99/month, up to 20 customers). It is free for the customer and offers 14 trial days (truecoach.co/pricing).

TrainingForever

You have all free features up to 5 athletes; then, 0.99 € per active athlete per month, with a maximum of 49 €/month. For your athletes it's always free. You plan running (asphalt and trail), strength and mobility on the same calendar, cycling and swimming. Sessions are synchronized with Garmin Connect, Strava can be connected and sessions are also exported to Coros and Polar.

What does the free TrainingForever plan include?

  • Up to 5 athletes Free.
  • Planning (session → template → week → 8 week block), load, zones, RPE and adhesion.
  • Integrated force with exercises with images and videos.
  • Messages and files linked to each session, forms and panel "Need your attention".
  • Integration with Garmin Connect and connection to Strava (and export to Coros and Polar); if you come from another platform, we help you migrate.
  • Your athletes never pay.

Optional, monthly and non-permanence gems: Assistant AI, Video, Business (Stripe, Invoices, MRR and Churn), Automation, Advanced Analysis and Extended Storage.

When do you stop making up for free?

  1. When you're past five clients. At TrainingForever you pay €0.99 per active athlete, with a maximum of €49/month.
  2. When you lose more than 1 hour a week charging by transfer or Bizum: you can activate automatic payments.
  3. When your athletes wear different watches and the free tool doesn't connect them all.
  4. When you have customers of strength and endurance and you're using two apps.

How to choose free software: 8 questions before registering

It's expensive for free if you're forced to change tools in six months. Before registering your first customer, check:

  1. How many athletes do you include for free and what happens when you exceed the limit? Look for the exact price of the next step on the official website, not in old comparatives.
  2. Is it free for you or just for the athlete? Many payment tools have free athlete account, but the coach pays from the first customer.
  3. Does it cover your disciplines? If you combine race and strength, a single tool saves you from passing data from one app to another.
  4. Does it connect to the watches of your athletes? Look at the official list of integrations and distinguish what already works from what is "developing".
  5. How do you communicate? Comments per session, messages and files prevent the tracking from getting lost on WhatsApp.
  6. Can you collect initial information? An entry questionnaire saves you the first call; you have a model in our initial form template.
  7. How are you going to collect? If the tool does not manage payments for you, it defines the process from the beginning. We explained how to get paid by your athletes.
  8. Where are the data and who treats them? Look at the privacy policy and the treatment manager's contract (see below).

Free spreadsheet or software?

With one or two customers, a shared spreadsheet works. The problem comes when you have to cross the plan with what has been done: the athlete manually copies the data of the clock, forgets to write down the RPE and you waste time searching for messages. A free software gives you at least:

  • Schedule shared with structured sessions.
  • Clock data arriving alone, without copying and pasting.
  • Comments and feelings linked to each session.
  • Reusable templates not to write the same week twice.

Health data and GDPR: what you cannot forget

Heart rate, injuries, weight or menstrual cycle are health-related data, a special category that Article 9 GDPR allows for treatment only in specific cases, such as the explicit consent of the data subject (Regulation (EU) 2016/679). Before choosing tool:

  • Ask for the explicit consent of the athlete to process your health data and keep it.
  • Check that the platform offers a processing manager contract and where it hosts the data.
  • Just pick up what you're going to use for training.

The Spanish Agency for Data Protection (AEPD) has guides and tools for small managers. This is not legal advice: if you have doubts, consult a professional.

If you come from another platform

Changing tool gives laziness for templates and history. In TrainingForever we help you migrate: write to us and we see with you how to pass your templates and your athletes. For a wider view, compare also in the best software for coaches.

Real Case: How does Marc Bañuls apply it?

Real Case: Marc Bañuls, coach with more than 15 years experience. "When you start, you don't need the most expensive tool, but one that doesn't force you to change when you grow up."

How to start for free? (4 steps)

  1. Create your account (unpaid).
  2. Load 2–3 session templates that you already use.
  3. Invite your athletes by link or code.
  4. To connect your Garmin Connect account and, if you want, Strava (the sessions are also exported to Coros and Polar).
