HRV and TSS in TrainingPeaks: what they are and how TrainingForever works

What TrainingPeaks TSS is, how it relates to CTL, ATL and TSB, how HRV is logged and which metrics of its own TrainingForever uses.

What is TSS in TrainingPeaks?

TSS (Training Stress Score) is the TrainingPeaks load score. It combines the duration of a session with its intensity relative to the athlete’s threshold. By TrainingPeaks’ definition, one hour right at threshold equals 100 TSS.

CTL, ATL and TSB in TrainingPeaks

  • CTL: average load over recent weeks (what TrainingPeaks calls “fitness”).
  • ATL: average load over the last few days (recent fatigue).
  • TSB: CTL − ATL; a negative value means recent load is above the usual load.

HRV in TrainingPeaks

In TrainingPeaks, HRV is logged as one more daily metric, alongside sleep, weight or how the athlete feels. It helps read load in context: HRV dropping for several days while TSB falls is a signal to review the plan.

How TrainingForever does it: its own metrics

TrainingForever does not use TSS, CTL, ATL or TSB. It has its own metrics, with their own names and calculations:

  • CT (Total Load): the load of each session.
  • IR (Relative Intensity): session intensity relative to the athlete’s thresholds.
  • PP (Weighted Power): the representative power of a session with pace changes.
  • AC (Chronic Adaptation) and FA (Acute Fatigue): sustained and recent load.
  • DC (Load Differential): the difference between the two.

Watch HRV appears on the athlete profile, next to their sessions and the RPE they log from their phone.

Frequently asked questions

Does TrainingForever calculate TSS?

No. TrainingForever uses its own metrics (CT, IR, PP, AC, FA and DC). TSS is a TrainingPeaks metric.

Can I move my CTL values into TrainingForever?

Not directly: the calculations are different. What carries over is the idea of comparing sustained load (AC) with recent load (FA).

Where do I see my athletes’ HRV?

In TrainingForever, watch HRV appears on each athlete’s profile.
